Tantek has documented some Communication Protocols (a work in progress) for purely factual communication from his experiences communicating with others.
Communication within IT companies is always a comical subject. Every company usually employs a range of people spannning stereotypes from the super-geeky engineer who's communication is well versed in many languages (few verbal in nature)... to the sales rep who is well versed in closing deals business lingo and catch phrases... to the designer who uses their hands to describe most things and who can better express their ideas when the have a pen and paper... to the receptionist who chats with her friends on the phone all day about what's going on the gossip mags and ends every IM with one or more emoticons.
When I'm on a roll and efficiently trucking along during the day I tend to be as efficient as possible (short, precise, and to the point) in my communications. While most of the people with whom I communicate value this type of factual communication, however occasionally I fire off an email to someone not and I get a response asking why I'm being so terse... Arg!
Those who know me know that I usually always know that I normally wear a smile, but I have to remember to add a hear-felt greeting or salutation in communication with those with who may not know me so well. Or perhaps I'll just forward them a link to this page. =)
While Tantek's document is directed towards factual communication which works well in business context, it doesn't always go over so well when instant messaging your new girlfriend... but it's funny to think about documenting "Efficient habits for purely emotional communication between humans" =P
